Saturday, June 29th 2013 London, Greater London Barbican Hall United Kingdom
Time: 7:30pm. Address: Silk St London. A potent Arabic and Mediterranean pulse runs through the inimitable combination of traditional Middle Eastern and Western elements which characterises Lebanese composer and oud master Marcel Khalifé’s music. Declared Artist for Peace in 2005 by UNESCO, Khalifé has always worked to give full voice to the joys and heartbreaks of a fraught region like the Middle East, never being afraid to make music even in the face of war – and his performances in bombed-out concert halls in his native Lebanon are statement to that. Tonight he is joined by the Al Mayadeen Ensemble – which he founded in 1978 – to perform music inspired by the verses of Palestine’s beloved late poet and exiled hero, Mahmoud Darwish. Pensive vocals intertwine with hints of jazz ballads and symphonic classics, mirroring the haunting journey of Darwish’s words through sorrow, reflection, and joy despite mortality. The concert is presented in co-sponsorship with the London Palestine Film Festival. www.palestinefilm.org

It is crucial not only to understand what is happening, but especially to anticipate tomorrow’s challenges. How can glimpse the coming decades for equality, social cohesion, international relations, education or ethics? Nothing that happens is inevitable for freethinkers. The world is what we make of it, provided that never disarm critical thinking and civic engagement. To overcome criticism, understand to act, deconstruct to reconstruct.
