We always listen to your songs. One of the few real and couragious men left in the Arab world.
We always sang your songs in our marches and demonstrations. We salute our martyrs with these songs. They give us hope and enthusiasm all the time. In 1996, when we were surrounded by the Israelis in the RCHospital in Ramallah, one of the wounded youths was singing 'ANA AHMAD ALARABY, FAL YA'TI ALHISAR'. We lost him four days later and his brother was shouting 'BIL AGHDAR KAFANAHOU'.

comments: i am a lebanese citizen from a de-politicized middle class family. the first time i heard a song for marcel was when i was 12 years old. it was "oumi". i would never forget that feeling i had. the "oud" penetrating my veins and darwish's words invading in a sense i didn't understand back then. now i understand. i am 19 years old studying at McGill university and this is my first time away from home. i sleep on this song and wake up on it. patriotism, nationalism, justice, right and wrong,....from ahmad el arabi to ana youssef ya abi passing by rita and jawaz el safar, if someone reflects the arabian conscience and cause in this life, it is marcel. moreover, i don't consider marcel bound to our arab society but through his music he is a real international (in the marxist and anti-marxist sense). i met him last winter in beirut during mahmoud darwish's poetry evening in unesco and the fact that a person so modest and "shy" with all his history and fame astonished me.
marcel khalife is every arab and "free" man and women's conscience.
