Let them write! Let them think! Let them SING! The real travesty to Islam is what we do to each other in its name! I speak as a concerned Muslimah!

I can not believe that he is being persecuted in Lebanon, whose government is headed by such intellectuals as Dr Hoss..& has fine poets ,such as Dr Karam, who also is from the South, in its cabinet. I do not understand..........VH Nassar

comment: Lebanon is a democracy. What makes it special is that it values democracy, and thereby freedom of speech. By engaging in this practice, (the procesution of Mr. Khalifa), we are in violating the very principles upon which our country was founded. As a Lebanese, I am both embarrassed and shocked at our governments effort to engage in censorship, and artistic criticism. Doesn't our government have more import things to worry about..? Since when did we elect them to preside as music critics...? In all honesty, I have not read the lyrics to Mr. Khalifa's music that carefully, nor is it important that I do so. What is more important is that we preserve, protect and defend the right of people to say and think as they please, even if we strongly disagree with them. I find this legal action against Mr. Khalifa very disturbing.

comment: I am shocked by the false accusations and hatred that were directed against a great voice of nationalism, liberty and great outcry for justice. Marcel and Darwish are two unique individuals that our so called Arab world lacks, and we can not afford to silence them just for the sake of "egoism". I am a muslim and I don't see a slight lack of respect to our Koran. Marcel sang for all the freedom fighters in THE GREAT SOUTH OF LEBANON and in Palestine, when many others kept their guns and mouths shut. Despite all the the false claims, Marcle's voice will not be silenced, for his voice is the voice of all the oppressed people all over the Arab World. As a Palestinian, an Arab and above all as I Muslim, I say leave OUR VOICE free, for you imprisoned our bodies, mind, but not our voice.thank you.

comment: It is inplorable that on the eve of the next millenium and under the seige and agressions of the Zionists, we are still diverting our efforts into a massive punishment against our writers, poets and singers. A musician of Marcel's caliber humanity can not get twice. Marcel has always been the living conscience of all Arabs. With his music and singing the lyrics of the most devoted Arabs nationalists poetry, Marcel has elevated us to a different level, a level that was not reached before and never after. Marcel's music and songs have always been the last parcel of dignity we had in this century of disappointment and failure for the Arab history and culture. I strongly recommend the Lebanese gvt to drop all charges against Marcel, who represents us as free Arabs and free souls.

comment: Lebanon, our contry of origin and pride, cannot continue to let down it's people by putting down its artists and great figures of international recognition such as Marcel Khalife. This man is a signature of our pride, a man that has brought us together with music and artistry to remind us of our beloved nation that still suffers and begs to restore its Golden Age. Please, save the name of Lebanon, and do not make us seem like a Dictatorship where artists are not allowed the freedom of expression. Lebanon cannot fall under such category. Let us remember who we have always been. We are trying to rebuild, not to continue the destruction. Marcel Khalife is to Lebanon what Gibran Khalil Gibran was at one point in time. Do not kill his art and spirit. Lebanon needs him to remember the wrong and to change to make things right.

comment: To Whom it May Concern: I am a travel agent and just this week returned from Lebanon. My dream has always been to be able to book Americans to this beautiful country without fear. That is why it absolutely angers me that so famous an artist is treated so badly. It does not speak well for a country who is trying to impress tourists with fancy new buildings and western attitudes: The most important gift is the music and songs that represent the life (good or bad) as is was and is. It is the culture that people gravitate to and through all your years of war, Marcel Khalife brought the most beautiful part of the Arab culture to the world, through his incredible artistic songs and music. I would further suggest that now that tourism is high on your adgenda, you must respect the one thing that Americans so cherish - that is FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. That means Speech,Music and Dance as well as culture, religion, and politics.
